Man Killed by Exploding Cell Phone Battery?
A report from a Chinese daily newspaper indicates that a man has been killed when his cell
phone battery exploded, severing an artery in his neck.
The report, from the Shin Min Daily News did not identify the man but stated that he was an
employee at a computer shop in Guangzhou, China, where the incident occurred.
It's unclear if he had been using the phone, holding to his face, when the explosion occurred, thus
leading to the severing of the artery. It's also unclear if the battery was truly at fault, or if the cell
phone exploded, but realistically --- come on, it was China. The likelihood is the battery was a
cheap knock-off. In fact, the phone itself could have been one as well.
The report did state the victim had just finished charging the battery and inserted it into the
phone.
Authorities have not determined the make of the cell phone or battery yet.
This isn't the first time a cell phone or battery explosion has killed someone in China: in June
2007, a 22-year-old welder, Xiao Jinpeng of Gansu province, died from chest wounds received
when his cell phone exploded while he was at work at an iron mill.
Makes you think twice about buying those cheap batteries from China on eBay, doesn't it?
